Video Friday: Timpanogos

This post is for my new friends from Symantec and PWC. This video is a sunrise from the top of Timpanogos; only this view would beat the one from my office window.

100 Hikes in Utah Photo - Upper Chimney Canyon

This was a cool little canyon near the Chute of Muddy Creek. In fact, if I recall correctly, you can descend from Upper Chimney all the way to Muddy Creek if you have enough rope. A hike description can be found on page 164.

100 Hikes in Utah Photo - Little Hole

When Steve Mann and I turned in the pictures for our book, 100 Hikes in Utah, the publisher was very impressed with the quality of the photos. So much so that they wanted to change the book to be a part of their 100 Classic Hikes series that had all-color photography. However, because the marketing department said Utahans are too cheap to pay for a color book (They're right, we are) we had to go back to black and white.

Most of the photography in the book was done by Steve. I found an old CD that had a bunch of pictures that didn't make the book, so with his permission, I'm going to share them with you.

The Little Hole trail description can be found on page 49. Enjoy.

I was going through some old Black & Whites and found this picture from Peekaboo and Spooky and figured I'd post it.

Video Friday: Peekaboo Gulch

This morning I was thinking about Coyote Gulch. I searched Youtube for video but couldn't find any. So, I started searching for any of the gulches in my book. I looked for Buckskin Gulch, Lewellyn Gulch, Peekabo Gulch, and Upper Gulch, but I was only able to find one lame video from Grand Gulch. So, I went to google video and found this video of Spooky Gulch. (You can find it on page 186 of my book, 100 hikes in Utah.) The video is a little dry compared the canyoneering videos I've posted previously, but it was about all I could find.

This is a great little canyon for non-technical canyoneering. If you've done Bell and Little Wild Horse canyons, Peekaboo and Spooky should be next on your list.

BTW, if you find any other video of hikes in my book, please send me the link.

FlyBoise

I spent the day today in Boise, ID. It was a quick, one-day trip to a customer site. My coworker laughed at me for wanting to take pictures of th Mongolian Barbeque place. I also got a picture of the Boise State football stadium, the home of the smurf-turf. Of the pictures I took, I like this picture of the airport the best.

Hospital

The past 2 days I have been hanging out at the hospital with my daughter. She came in for a surgery for a second time (the first one didn't take) and we expected her to be up and around today, as she was last time. Things have moved along less than perfectly and she is still in bed. It hurts to see her in pain and know I can do very little for her. I'm hoping my dancing princess will get well soon.

Horses

Last week I took the local Varsity Scout team out to take some pictures of llamas. I was teaching the photography merit badge and I wanted them to have an opportunity to develop a role of black and white film. While there, I took a few pictures of these horses that were in the same area.

Horses have always kind of spooked me. In fact, I recall a time when I was hiking outside Superior, MT, and a couple in our party had some horses. They let me ride one down a canyon during a hike to an outlying fishing spot. I remember being so freaked out. I couldn't see the trail. I was ready to jump ship, anticipating the horse falling down the ravine. I'm sure I was freaking out the horse as much as he was freaking me out. We made it to the bottom of the canyon, but I hiked back out.

So, although there is nothing special about these photos, shooting horses at close range with my 20mm lens exhilarates me.

Looks like the "Bottomless Pit" could be a little freaky.
